Year 6 have been studying Lewis Carroll’s famous nonsense poem; The Jabberwocky. We examined the use of portmanteau words and created some of our own. We looked at sentence structure and word classes in order to make sense out of it. Using our imaginations we drew pictures of The Jabberwocky, based on the limited amount of information that Lewis Carroll gave us about its appearance. We used these images as inspiration to write monster poems ourselves.
As a finale to this literacy unit we learnt how to dramatise and recite The Jabberwocky aloud in front of an audience. Everyone had to learn to read the poem off by heart and speak out clearly, with expression. We practised by recording our voices on iPads, playing them back and improving upon what we heard. Once perfected, we used an iPad to film us performing the poem.
